The reason why you were recently not short listed for promotion in your organization has probably very little to do with your qualifications. It could be all about lacking the basic skills that would tremendously increase your chances of promotion. Here are three tips that will enable you to master the art of getting promoted:

1. Learn New Skills

The current economic conditions have forced many companies to cut unnecessary layers of management. For this reason, many people who manage to get promoted are those who are able to offer services or perform tasks that are in high demand in the organization. Such jobs will require different skills that many of the employees posses. Since the whole system is in the shape of a pyramid - with few people at the top and many at the bottom - it is obvious that the skills in demand are probably the most difficult to attain. This may be as a result of the high costs involved in acquiring these skills, the length it takes to get the skills or simply the scarcity of the institutions that are able to train skilled personnel in such areas. So; the rule is simple – look for the tasks with the highest demand and least competition and then acquire the necessary skills to get the tasks done.

2. People are Power.

The higher you climb the corporate ladder, the more you’ll need to work with, and through people. This means that you will be required to understand human behavior more than you would be required if you were working at lower levels. To better understand people, you need to know who is in charge of what. You also need to know which feathers should never be ruffled and which toes should never be stepped on. Don’t forget to relate well with those under you; you may never know how much power they wield until you collide with them.

3. Chances aren’t given, they are taken.

Despite the fact that there are so many confrontations in the world (between wife and husband, children and parents), it is still difficult for many employees who feel that they deserve promotions to face their bosses and request for the much coveted promotion. It is only those who know that they indeed should be promoted that take the next step and ask for a promotion. The attitude that any employee who feels that he/she deserves promotion should have, should be one where the employee is ready to outline reasons why he/she believes that he/she deserves the promotion.

In addition to this, many people also fail to take up opportunities as they arise. These opportunities come in very mundane forms and this is probably one of the reasons why they are so easily undetected. All you need to do is to show your leadership skills whenever opportunities arise. Once this is done, you’ll be all too ready to take up a “vacant” position once it arises.

Different organizations have got different recruitment and promotion policies which need to be mastered. This is because the owners, founders, or management have/lack certain values which in turn guide their promotion and recruitment procedures. However, once you master these three, you’ll be able to understand why certain names find their way into the “short list.”
