Step 1: Develop similar value systems The Bible asks: Is it possible for two people to walk together unless they agree? For any family to stand up to the tough times and remain united and peaceful requires that the couples in the marriage have shared values.

Step 2: Be ready to mend broken relationship All families will at one time or another come to some point where relationships are close to breaking. Make it your duty to put effort to mending broken relationships, and you will avoid complete family break-ups.

Step 3: Have time for each other We all know that the modern world is extremely hectic, demanding our attention all the time. However, it is critical to note that you want to keep your family together, you must also learn to spend a lot of time together with them so as to show them that you really care about them.

Step 4: Listen! Listen! Listen! When together, always make sure that you are ready to listen to each other for the relationship to work. The time that you spend together should be quality time and it is not just an issue of sitting together for one hour watching TV. Get time to listen to one another and you will end up forming very strong family bonds.

Step 5: Build trust within the family One of the causes of break-ups in many families is the lack of trust among couples. To ensure that a family sticks together at all times, it is necessary to put up mechanisms that will build trust between family members, and making sure that members do not treat each other with suspicion. It is obvious that if in a family people treat each other with suspicion, the family won't last for long.

Step 6: Respect one another The other step to keeping families together is making sure that there is full respect in the home. If the spouses respect each other and the children see them, it will most likely cause the children to respect each other and their parents too.

Step 7: Resolve conflicts away from the kids Ensure that problems are solved away from the children. When the children see that the parents are fighting each other, they will not unite.

Step 8: Develop family rituals These things are unique to your family and are habits that your children should love so much that they wish they could pass the ritual down to their children. This may mean that you have an outing every month or you bond together every Wednesday evening. Whatever you choose to do, ensure that it is something that easily involve everyone in the family.

Tips * To help create family unity, always ensure that conflict between parents is always solved away from the children. This will help prevent putting the children in an awkward position.

Warning * To ensure that your children avoid resenting one another, avoid showing favoritism to one child over the other.
